Our History

In 1986 Ed Knight and Al Dorin left another local appraisal company to form Knight & Dorin, Inc. a real estate appraisal and consulting company based in Henrico County, Virginia.  They had experience in appraising both residential and commercial property, but the new company focus was on commercial and land properties.

The savings and loan crisis that occurred in the late 1980s created an environment of higher required standards for appraisals.  Knight & Dorin, Inc. was able to successfully meet the challenge of the higher standards which lead to a growing list of satisfied lender clients.  In 1990 Parks Rountrey became an owner and as a result the name was changed to Knight, Dorin & Rountrey, Inc.

The 1990s were a time of economic growth for the region and country, and for Knight, Dorin & Rountrey.  The company added staff and appraisers.  Avenues of work spread from lenders to also include local government, corporate, private and eminent domain appraisal needs.  In the mid-1990s, the company expanded into other real estate related work becoming a consultant for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).  This division of the company provided turnkey right of way acquisition services to VDOT – appraisals, negotiations, relocations and title work.

After several years of continued growth, a decision was made in 2001 to spin the new right-of-way division off into a separate company KDR Real Estate Services.  Al Dorin left to become owner and president of the new company.  Parks Rountrey decided to semi-retire and Ed Knight became sole owner of Knight, Dorin & Rountrey, Inc.  The company moved to Hanover County, VA where it remains today.

The company still maintains high standards in the quality of the appraisals it produces.  This requires a good well-trained staff, up-to-date technology and access to data. The company has poised itself for the future with several next generation appraisers on staff including Michael Knight son of co-founder Ed Knight.  Michael started with the company in 2003 and now as President has assumed many of the day-to-day administrative and operational duties.
